It’s been about a year since historic wind energy projects were announced by Alliant Energy and MidAmerican Energy. We thought it would be a good time to check in on the progress of each project.
Together these two projects represent $4.6 billion in investment in our state. Iowa, already #1 in the nation, will close in on our goal of 40% wind power by 2020 as these projects are completed.
Alliant Energy Update
In July of 2016, Alliant Energy announced their plans to invest approximately $1 billion in wind energy. Their project includes the expansion of the Whispering Willow Wind Farm in Franklin, Iowa. This project is expected to add 500 megawatts of clean energy to meet customer needs. The preliminary project schedule has construction work commencing in 2018.
Justin Foss, spokesperson for Alliant Energy, said they are still in the acquisitions phase for the project. Presently, they are working on acquiring more land to continue moving the project forward.
MidAmerican Energy Update
In April of 2016, MidAmerican Energy announced their plans to invest $3.6 billion in the Wind XI Project. 1,000 new wind turbines will be constructed for this project, adding 2,000 megawatts of wind generation capacity in Iowa. This is the largest economic development in Iowa’s history.
Last month, MidAmerican Energy began construction on Beaver Creek wind park in Greene and Boone counties. Construction was also started in Prairie Wind Park, in Mahaska County. This project is expected to be completed by the end of 2017. These wind parks are presumed to generate a total of 338 megawatts of energy. The Beaver Creek wind park will consist of 85 turbines, producing 170 megawatts of energy. Prairie wind park will have 84 turbines and generate 168 megawatts of wind generation capacity.
“MidAmerican is continuing to work with developers, county officials and landowners at potential wind farm sites in other Iowa counties for the balance of the Wind XI project,” said Tina Pothoff, Director of Communications at MidAmerican Energy.
Construction of the remaining project sites are expected to be complete in 2018 or 2019, dependent on each site. Other sites will be announced at a later date. The construction of the entire Wind XI project is expected to be completed by December 2019.
